Report
After arriving at the roadside at 0900 as planned, the group moved
up the valley making stops at a number of potential camp sites.
As most of the NCOs had not been in to this valley before, the opportunity
was taken to briefly familiarize them with each area in terms of
facilities and hazards, before being responsible for a group of
cadets in the area on later camps.
A longer than normal
lunch break was taken to enable some in-depth instruction &
supervision to be carried out on the subject of fire lighting. For
various reasons, a number of JNCOs were inexperienced in this subject,
and coupled with the wet ground conditions under foot, this challenge
proved very beneficial.
Following lunch, the
group walked for a little more than 2 hours to the upper reaches
of the valley, and then returned to the roadside via the ridge into
the next valley. Although no-one was heavily loaded, this was a
good test of footwear particularly, for a number of people who on
normal Squadron camps may only tramp for 20 – 30 minutes at
a time. We were fortunate to experience mainly fine mild weather
during the day, which aided in the success of the training undertaken.
The overall objectives of the day were:
*Familiarise NCOs &
Staff with potential bush training areas
*Fire Lighting Training
*Experience medium distance walking with a group
*Team Building amongst NCO group
Overall, this was a successful
and more importantly enjoyable day for all.
